A mammogram is a medical examination that uses low-dose X-rays to image the breast and is currently the most effective method for screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer.
It can detect tiny lumps or calcifications that a doctor cannot detect by palpation, allowing for early detection of cancer when the cure rate is highest.
Examination Classification: Screening Examination: Suitable for women without any abnormal breast symptoms, intended for regular cancer screening.
Diagnostic Examination: Suitable for patients with breast abnormalities (such as palpable lumps, nipple discharge, skin dimpling) or abnormal screening results; the examination process is more detailed. Examination Process and Sensation: Short: The entire examination usually only takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Breast Compression: To obtain clear images and reduce radiation exposure, the radiologist will use two plastic plates to flatten the breast for a few seconds.
Sensation: A noticeable squeezing sensation or slight discomfort may be felt during the compression, but usually not severe pain, and the discomfort disappears immediately after the pressure is released.
Pre-examination Preparation: Avoid Menstruation: Try to schedule the examination one week after menstruation ends, when the breasts are least likely to be tender.
Skin cleansing: Do not apply deodorant, perfume, talcum powder, or moisturizer to your chest or underarms on the day of your examination.
The metallic particles in these products will appear as white dots under X-rays and may interfere with the doctor’s diagnosis.
Comfortable clothing: It is recommended to wear a two-piece outfit, as you will need to remove your top for the examination.
Screening age recommendations: The medical community generally recommends that healthy women begin routine breast screening annually or every two years starting at age 40 or 45.
If you have a family history of breast cancer or high-risk factors, you should start earlier. You can refer to the American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines for detailed age guidelines.
